The Bradanos torrent
flows, with its clear and chilly water, from the Apennine mountain in the
territory of San Fele in the Basilicata region. In this part of the territory the stream makes particular altitude
jumps that gives rise to the characteristic waterfalls of San Fele and then it
continues its course till to meet the Ofanto river.
The waterfalls take their name from U Uattenniere a dialectal transposition of the German word Walche. A Gualchiera
was a kind of machine used in the old factories built near the falls to use the
force of the water, that falling on some wooden blades made move the hammers
that hit the raw wool. The processing served to wash, clean and make the wool
softer so it was ready for the next processing. The force of the water was also
used for the water mills; which ruins together with the factorys
ruins testify the great talent of Sanfelesi people during the XVI century.
Thanks to the work and care of the
volunteers of the Association today we can admire the main part of the
waterfalls brought back to their ancient and charming beauty.

The Association
is still working to the restoration of the whole route of the torrent in order
to admire the natural beauties of the area.
The visitors can choose different
routes: short or long with different difficulties for beginners and for
trekking experts.
